Patrick,

The configure(1) script should not have written the messages that it did: the 
portion of the script that checks for the system logging daemon only uses 
echo(1), ps(1), and grep(1). The fact that you got error messages related for 
semaphores is bizarre!

I suspect that something's is wrong with your development environment.
