Marc, I know what your problem is. I can bore you with details if you what, but, basically, the RPC layer is timing-out because your downstream LDM doesn't receive a single byte of data in 35 seconds -- even though the upstream LDM is trying to send data. It could be that your network is overly congested, or packet filtering is going on (TCP connections on port 388 must be unrestricted). In any case and for whatever reason, the bandwidth of your pipe just isn't large enough to handle the amount of data you're requesting.
