Oh dear.  That's in the RPC library.  Not much chance of finding-out
what went wrong.

Do you know of any RPC- or network-related patches that might be
relevant?  Person's systems is

    RedHat EL 3 update 2 kernel 2.4.21-15.0.4.ELsmp
