20040624: LDM-6.0.14 assertion error under Fedora Core 2 (2.6 kernel)

This is the first report of this failure -- even though LDM 6.0.14 has
been in widespread use for a while, now.  Because Linux is known to
have bugs, I suspect that the problem might lie in the operating-system
rather than the LDM.

I'll investigate the assertion failure to the extent that I can,
however.
