Hi Rodrigo,
Please let us know if Steve Chiswell's reply to the note you sent
to the ldm-users email list answered your questions.
One thing that Steve did not tell you is that the ldm-mcidas 'area2png'
routine is used to compress images in McIDAS AREA format using a PNG
compression of the image portion of the data (not the header). We
use this routine to compress the images sent in the Unidata-Wisconsin
datastream (IDD feedtype UNIWISC (aka MCIDAS)) for transmission.
Up until fairly recently, Unidata McIDAS users needed to uncompress
these images using the ldm-mcidas utility 'pnga2area'. With the
latest Unidata McIDAS addendum (v2006f), however, McIDAS users
can now read the PNG-compressed images directly (like GEMPAK has
been able to do for quite some time).
