You can find these archive data and then add them to the IDV. One site is NCDC
https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/model-data/model-datasets/global-forcast-system-gfs
One of their TDS catalogs is:
https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/thredds/catalog/model-gfs-g4-anl-files-old/catalog.xml
Another site is NCAR data center:
https://rda.ucar.edu/thredds/catalog/catalog.xml You needs to register to login
to this TDS server.
If you have the TDS catalog, you can enter into the IDV catalog widget. If you
have the individual file, you can use the URL widget in the IDV. For details,
you can
reference the user guide.
By the way, who is the professor of your synoptic class? Would you be able to
provide me his contact information?
Thanks,
Yuan
