In general, it is very difficult to stop a process once this process entering
the JVM. My worst case is to stop the IDV, restart the computer is pretty rare
and my machine is Mac Book.

Yes, it is possible to create the derived field when the gridded data is loaded
and here is some information you can review:

I think if the 2) is working as you expected, the 3) should be the same.
