[IDV #ERN-415616]: request to add these changes to IDV

This archive contains answers to questions sent to Unidata support through mid-2025. Note that the archive is no longer being updated. I do not have a problem with this, but I would write

if (times != null && !times.isEmpty()) {

This is theoretically a public API method, but I presume it is only being used 
internally by the IDV, so no code should break elsewhere?
