The IDV document you can reference is the workshop guide: "https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/docs/workshop/" and userguide: "https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/docs/userguide/" These two documents will teach you how to write a formula and some basic information of Jython.
