Heather,
      It would be a bit challenge if you have no Jython experience. There are 
many Jython document available online you can google it yourself. The IDV 
document you can reference is the workshop guide:

"https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/docs/workshop/";

and userguide:

"https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/docs/userguide/";

These two documents will teach you how to write a formula and some basic 
information of Jython.
