Perhaps you are having a networking problem. Can you access the dods url 
directly in your browser:
http://motherlode.ucar.edu:8080/thredds/dodsC/casestudies/ccs039/grids/netCDF/1998062912_eta.nc.das

If you can then why don't you try the bundle in the IDV again. If you cannot 
access the above URL then maybe there is a firewall issue on your end?
