Luis,
We fixed a number of lockup bugs after the workshop last week. Why don't you try
this with the latest nightly build:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/downloads/idv/nightly/index.jsp

If it still is hanging can you dump the stack trace with:
kill -3 <process id> 

and send it in?
