Hi,
This is Jeff.
Another thing you can do is to cap limit the image size, described here:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/IDV/docs/userguide/misc/PerformanceTuning.html#maxsize

Basically, it will read in the full resolution data but will subsample it 
before trying to render.
