Apparently, GIF in 1.6 supports compression which it didn't in 1.5. This will be fixed in tonight's build. One wrinkle though. In 1.5, setting a compression type was not supported, but by default GIF compressed the image. Now that the compression can be set, the image quality flag is being used so the default mode of High (low compression) results in larger images. So, if you care about the size of the resulting images, set the quality to low which gives you a high compression rate. Since GIF is lossless you don't lose image quality.
