All-in-all, I like what I see with the IDV. I do feel that there are too many button clicks before the user can get at the data. As you said below, a customized data chooser might be the way to go. I've added some comments below.
A problem that we have with the IDV is that we don'tknow, a priori, the kinds of data and displays that our user base makes use of. We have local files, remote servers, numerous types of displays, many different
domains, etc.However, what you can do is to configure the IDV (e.g., with favorite bundles
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/content/software/IDV/docs/userguide/Bundles.html)to load in the data and create the displays that you want. Then its one click.
Our local data are mostly in the AWIPS flavor of NetCDF. We put the grib-encoded grids into NetCDF.
The IDV should(?) be able to handle the AWIPS NetCDF. -Jeff
