The binary RPM would definitely be worth a shot. You'll know pretty soon if it works on your machine. You might want to first move / backup your existing $NAWIPS directory because the RPM will create and install to /home/gempak/GEMPAK6.8.0/ by default. you can also specific the prefix on the rpm install command, check the install document for the right syntax.
