Steve, Even after patching $GARPHOME/object/displayvprof.c as you suggested, we still have some flaky behavior of the model vertical soundings. We have noticed this: if you plot a sounding (say uil), then overlay a model sounding at the same location, both soundings plot fine. Then if you toggle the model sounding off and then go to toggle it back on, you get an error: GEMPAK: [GEMPLT -12] NIMODE - Invalid mode. (it prints this three times) and the model sounding seems to have disappeared and it won't replot. It didn't seem to matter which model you used for the model sounding either.
