Pete,

Your attatchments were zero length, so I don't have a suggestion about that.

You are not limited to 8 bit color with GEMPAK, (hopefully you are running 
a version of 5.6.G or later), so you can probably work around your problems by
using a true color visual. Under Linux, and Gnome, I'd suggest using a 24 bit
visual for both the desktop and the Xvfb displays so that you don't have to 
worry 
about other applications that are running.

Your problem may be that you have an unpatched XFree86 4.2 server which will
allocate all 8 bit colors are read-only (freeColors will tell you about the
allocation). You need colors read-write in 8 bit mode in order to change
their color values in GEMPAK programs like. With patches, the Xfree86 server 
will work correctly, but 24 bit is generally easier to work with browsers etc
as well as GEMPAK.
