Here's another clue (and a success story woohoo!)
I read about the 24/8 overlay option and it is supported on
my card (Matrox G400 dual-head), so I set that up and tried
it, and lo and behold, ntl and garp work like a charm.
Perhaps they did something to the 8 bit pseudocolor trying to get
it to work along side the 24 that messed it up for the straight
8 bit?
My XF86Config file for this particular card (any supported
matrox card likely) follows if anyone wants to try it.
I've got accellerations disabled for now, but will continue to
tweak and figure out what works and what doesn't.
