Maisa, Your X display must have the default visual set to 8 bits. You can check this using the X11 program "xdpyinfo". Look for the default visual id and verify that it is set to 8 bits/pseudocolor. If you are using Linux, then use KDE, TWM, FVWM etc as the window manager and not GNOME since GNOME will allocate all colors as read-only. You can also use the "freeColors" program in $GEMEXE to tell you how many colors you have available.
