Andy, Your grib file contains a Gaussian grid. GEMPAK cannot handle grids where the row spacing is variable. Eg, the gridpoint spacing in your data varies with latitude. The dcgrib decoder can interpolate the quasi-thinned grids to a regular spaced grid so that GEMPAK can handle them, but there is no provision for Gaussian grids.
