Tom, Gdradr does not use an X server. It remaps all the radar images in the requested region to a common grid projection and samples the data accordingly. Here is an example from the last Unidata newsletter that I provided showing the use of the radar data with other data overlays in nmap2: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/staff/chiz/gifs/nmapexample.gif Note that each radar NIDS product is in a local projection, so eventually, if you are combining fixed images from multiple radars, you will begin to have problems with overlapping radar regions not aligning.
