20010507: setting DISPLAY variable

Talbot,
I realized I sent my respnse to the address from which your question
originated. See enclosed.

Talbot,
The xdpyinfo does show your default visual is 8 bits.
I'm assuming you are running in a csh. I saw your setenv line
below for your DISPLAY variable. I assumed you ment:
% setenv DISPLAY met1.la.asu.edu:0
% ntl
instead you have:
>>> setenv met1.la.asu.edu DISPLAY:0 (this is the Linux box)
>>>ntl
If you are actually typing what you show below, then that can be the problem
since
you would not be contacting your LInux system display- you probably are
contacting
the Alpoha X server which you aren't allowed to do.
If that isn't the problem....
Have you tried using KDE or FVWM instead of GNOME?
