Clint,
My interpretation of VCOORD is that it will copy over surface values
on the specified coordinates, so if you gave gvcord=pres/thta
and vcoord=none;hght, then aside from the theta coordinate grids,
you will copy over those grids on level=0 of the specified
vcoord. This won't copy over every pressure grid from the original
file to my reading. Instead, you would use gdmod as you mentioned.
