Don,

I'm back from vacation after teaching our Gempak workshop.

I put together a tar file at:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/gempak/contrib/readshape.tar.gz

the tarfile includes a program readshape.c which will read in a
shapefile and associated shape DBF file and dump the data to
a gempak ascii file which can then be converted with ssfgsf to
a gempak binary map file.

I enclosed an AWIPS county data base data set as an example of how to
convert the file (see steps iin README file).
