19990128: decoding GRIB files from NCEP FTP server

This archive contains answers to questions sent to Unidata support through mid-2025. Note that the archive is no longer being updated. We provide the archive for reference; many of the answers presented here remain technically correct, even if somewhat outdated. If you download the 252 MB Gempak file, then this is already
decoded by NCEP ingto a GEMPAK format. You should be able to
use all of the GEMPAK gd programs on this file.

The raw grib files would be such as those under the
pub/data1/ directory. If you download those, then you will
have to convert them to GEMPAK format using dcgrib or nagrib.

The avn grib files on that server are:
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data1/avn/avn.990201/gblav.TxxZ.PGrbFxx

Perhaps you downloaded something else, BUFR, or a graphics file.
If you look at the top of a grib file with: od -c gribfile,
then you should see "GRIB".
