Wade,

Welcome to the world of weather data. Actually there is a quicker method
of obtaining a netCDF file then downloading the grib files and converting
them to netCDF. There is a NetcdfServer that is available for most NCEP
Model Data plus other data. To obtain the data go to:

http://motherlode.ucar.edu:8080/thredds/catalog.html

click on: NCEP Model Data
select the desired Model entries until the data entries appear.
select a data entry

a THREDDS Data Server page with different Access options will be
shown. The bottom option is the NetcdfServer that permits one to select
the desired parameters and forecast times. After your selection is made
and submitted, a netCDF file can be saved to you disk. This process is
much easier then getting the raw grib and doing the conversion yourself.
