Hi Chris, 

Still delving...this is what I have just gotten from the folks at COMET..


Jeff,

Hopefully one of our systems folks can answer this. We now use HP Unix on
the machines that we write the tapes. Once upon a time, we used Suns. We
don't compress the data, so he does not need to use the z option. We
write with an "m" suffix on our devices.

The technical details of what that means is beyond my knowledge.
