There were 0 awips packages installed, so I removed the directories
previously created by AWIPS (GFESuite/ httpd_pypies/ ldm/ pypies/ python/
qpid/ tools/ database/) none of which are *required* to be removed for an
update or install (/awips2/data is the only one which must be removed and
it didn't exist this morning).

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The RPMs are still installed by
yum, still grouped as "awips2-server".  The full steps I took on your
machine this morning as are follows:

So on and so forth, for the 84 packages in the group.  It's a slow download
processes and it's still at 31/84, so this will probably take another 30-40
minutes before EDEX is installed and running again.
