>From: Tom Yoksas <address@hidden> >Organization: UCAR/Unidata >Keywords: 200305121146.h4CBkd7U008640 McIDAS-X Linux Hi Marianne, Since you asked me before about compilation speeds for McIDAS on various platforms, I thought I would send along the following test results: I built Unidata McIDAS (which is a superset of SSEC McIDAS and also includes McIDAS-XCD) in /tmp on a dual Athlon 2400+ machine running RedHat 7.3 here at Unidata. For the timing test, I verified that nothing was running on the machine (load average of 0.00); the complete build took 00:07:43. For comparison, the complete build on one of our site's new Dell 2 x 2.4 GHz P4 box running RedHat 8.0 took 00:07:14. So, our dual Athlon 2400+ box compares favorably with the dual 2.4 GHz P4. The same the Dual Athlon hardware running FreeBSD performed the same build in 00:05:37! FreeBSD wins the speed test hands down!! Just thought you might be interested... Tom
