Hi Marianne,
Since you asked me before about compilation speeds for McIDAS on various
platforms, I thought I would send along the following test results:
I built Unidata McIDAS (which is a superset of SSEC McIDAS and
also includes McIDAS-XCD) in /tmp on a dual Athlon 2400+ machine
running RedHat 7.3 here at Unidata. For the timing test, I verified
that nothing was running on the machine (load average of 0.00); the
complete build took 00:07:43. For comparison, the complete build on
one of our site's new Dell 2 x 2.4 GHz P4 box running RedHat 8.0 took
00:07:14. So, our dual Athlon 2400+ box compares favorably with the
dual 2.4 GHz P4.
The same the Dual Athlon hardware running FreeBSD performed the same
build in 00:05:37! FreeBSD wins the speed test hands down!!
Just thought you might be interested...
