Hi Brian, re: > I think the issue is the local network a user connects from blocking 112. No, > Not ucar > nor your home ISP, but at least 2 others my folks have tried to use idv from > this year, > and the UM training lab we used if I recall Correctly? Yes, you are remembering correctly that the UMiami WiFi network was explicitly blocking connections to port 112 on remote machines. Why UMiami has chosen to do this is a bit of a mystery, but it does follow the lead for ultra-security minded institutions like the U.S. military and some governmental sites. This policy affects typically affects all privileged ports (<=512) with the exception of that used by web servers, port 80. re: > This is a firewall admin issue, beyond any of our control, but could there > be a more > helpful error thrown or something? I will ask the IDV guys if there is any way to determine programatically if requests to an ADDE server is being blocked by a firewall somewhere as opposed to the server not listening to the request. This is a big issue that promises to get bigger as time goes on (i.e., security locking things down more and more to the point that it becomes hard to get work done). Perhaps an official request could be sent to the UMiami networking group to open up ports 112 and 388? If you recall, we discussed this possiblity while in Miami for the training workshop, but the time frame was too short for anything to be done.
