Erick,
>After many delays I have McIDAS 7.4 and LDM 7.4 running on my server,
>an SGI Indy.
I assume that you mean ldm-mcidas 7.4, not LDM 7.4.
>The AREA files are coming in fine and I can display
>most imagery with menu and CLI commands.
OK.
>One thing I do notice is
>that startup is slower than with the 2.x version we were using
Yes, McIDAS has grown considerably since 2.102.
>and if more than about two users try to log on it almost freezes.
The amount of memory used by McIDAS is one of the biggest changes between
2.x and 7.x (even between 7.1 and 7.[45]). It could be that this machine
needs a lot more RAM in order to support more users concurrently.
>I know,
>you told me that running the host as an X client to several X servers
>was the least desireable configurations.
Right. This is even more true with the later versions of McIDAS.
>Now at least some of the
>faculty is accepting the concept of getting several dual boot PCs to
>run Linux for McIDAS and Windows for other stuff.
Sounds good.
>I still do not understand (or have forgotton) how to get all the pieces
>in place. Some products are just not loading.
You probably mean from the Fkey menu. Remember that the Fkey menu (and
Unidata GUI) gets information from the file SYSKEY.TAB. SYSKEY.TAB,
in turn, needs to be updated by the decoders so that information needed
by the Fkey menu is current/valid. This means:
o SYSKEY.TAB (and ROUTE.SYS) must be located in the directory in which
the ldm-mcidas decoders create their output data files
o each user's session must have a REDIRECTion that points to the copy
of SYSKEY.TAB that has been placed in the directory in which the
ldm-mcidas decoders create their output data files

Right off, you can see from the list that a number of products are turned off
('s' in column 1 of a ROUTE listing). So, you will never see these products.
If we eliminate those products from the listing, we get:
> LD NLDN Lightning Flashes 71-71 none none none 3
> MA Surface MD data default none 99076 33 SFC.BAT 3
> N1 GOES-8 IR/TOPO Composite 220-229 none none IR8TOPO.BAT 3

The first product in this list, the NLDN lightning data, is only received/
decoded if you have signed up to get the feed from SUNY Albany. Since I
don't know if you have done this, let's eliminate this one from the
discussion for now.
In the remaining products in the listing the only ones you have not received
any data for are ones created by ROUTE PostProcess BATCH files:
product codes N1-N8. The rest of the entries show that you are receiving
(and presumably decoding) the products that are expected.
>I would like to have someone log in and inspect my system and see if the
>missing link can be found.
I am guessing that the problem is that the account for the user running
the LDM has not been correctly configured to run ROUTE PP BATCH files.
This is a straightforward process, but it is a little confusing the first
time, so I would be happy to logon to your machine and poke around.
>If possible could this be done while we are on the phone together.
Perhaps. I will be in the office between 1:30 pm and 4:15 pm (mountain
time) this afternoon. You could give me a call at 303-497-8642 and
give me the login information (for your 'mcidas' and 'ldm' users)
so I could poke around.
>Thank you
You are welcome.
