Terri, I don't have an example of using gunzip(1) as an LDM decoder and it's a poor candidate for one (see <http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/ldm/ldm-current/basics/programs.html#decoders>. You'd be better off PIPE-ing to a script that invoked gunzip(1).
