Gilbert,

Good news. The recent upgrade of the O/S on weather2 has, apparently,
fixed this problem. We (Tom & I) were able to successfully restart the
LDM system as the LDM user.
Tom's Fedora 8 system is exhibiting a similar problem, but his is version
2.6.24.4-50 rather than 2.6.24.4-64.
I suspect, therefore, a bug in the O/S which is fixed in the latest
release.
What Linux mirror are you using?
The use of file "/etc/rc.local" for starting the LDM at boot-time
is unconventional. May we convert it to a more conventional form
using run-time states, /etc/init.d/, and /etc/rc{3,4,5}.d/?
