Steve, I found numerous references to APIC and ACPI incompatibilities for the 2.6 kernels when using SMP. Further, there's an interesting glitch, now worked around in my case, regarding PS/2 keyboards and mice. I'm really sorry 2.6 isn't working for this, as there are some efficiencies implemented in the IP stack that would have helped.
Anne, I'll preserve the iptables stuff you added; do I need to preserve any innd config files, or do you want to just re-install?
Tom,I've not ruled out the possibility of a hardware fault, but backing down the software in the face of the number of errors detected seems like the next troubleshooting step. It's faster than getting in a new motherboard. While there's a possibility it might be a fried Xeon, the fact that they post and there are no identifiable processor faults suggests that's not the vector. On-MoBo failures are somewhat harder to identify, but I'll keep looking.
Thanks, y'all! gerry Steve Emmerson wrote:

We're running version 2.6.8 of the kernel while's Bigbird's running version 2.6.5. There might have been a problem with (for example) file-locking or multiprocessor interrupts in the earlier version that's been fixed in the later one. Regards, Steve Emmerson

FC1 is reloaded. I've gotta do a kernel in the morning to get XFS going. It's stock w/ FC2 and the 2.6 kernels, but not w/ FC1 and the 2.4 kernels.I'll deal w/ this in the morning. I'm late for a meeting. Just wanted to update y'all. gerry -- Gerry Creager -- address@hidden Network Engineering -- AATLT, Texas A&M University Cell: 979.229.5301 Office: 979.458.4020 FAX: 979.847.8578 Pager: 979.228.0173 Office: 903A Eller Bldg, TAMU, College Station, TX 77843
