I had another failure about 2 hrs ago, which I just detected
(coffee-deficiency; should have caught it earlier). I'm going to move
the machine back to FC1 this weekend or Monday. Seems like the best way
to go for now.
Steve, I found numerous references to APIC and ACPI incompatibilities
for the 2.6 kernels when using SMP. Further, there's an interesting
glitch, now worked around in my case, regarding PS/2 keyboards and mice.
I'm really sorry 2.6 isn't working for this, as there are some
efficiencies implemented in the IP stack that would have helped.
Anne, I'll preserve the iptables stuff you added; do I need to preserve
any innd config files, or do you want to just re-install?
Tom,
I've not ruled out the possibility of a hardware fault, but backing down
the software in the face of the number of errors detected seems like the
next troubleshooting step. It's faster than getting in a new
motherboard. While there's a possibility it might be a fried Xeon, the
fact that they post and there are no identifiable processor faults
suggests that's not the vector. On-MoBo failures are somewhat harder to
identify, but I'll keep looking.
Thanks, y'all!

The above message contained the following:
My gut feeling at the moment is that bigbird has some sort of a
hardware problem. ...
Another reason that I suspect that bigbird has a hardware problem
is your comment that you had show stopping problems when trying to run
the latest FC2 kernel. ...
I wouldn't rule-out the possibility of a software bug in the
operating-system. We're running version 2.6.8 of the kernel while's
Bigbird's running version 2.6.5. There might have been a problem with
(for example) file-locking or multiprocessor interrupts in the earlier
version that's been fixed in the later one.

I rebuilt ossim on linux (SUSE 9.1) using gcc 3.4.2 and icp has now
copied over 4gb of a file with no problems. so i think its safe to say
its the compiler (gcc 3.33) on intel thats the problem.
best jim

FC1 is reloaded. I've gotta do a kernel in the morning to get XFS
going. It's stock w/ FC2 and the 2.6 kernels, but not w/ FC1 and the
2.4 kernels.
I'll deal w/ this in the morning. I'm late for a meeting.
Just wanted to update y'all.
