The decision on whether to use TCP or UDP to contact the portmapper on
the upstream host is made by the RPC layer and not the LDM.  Apparently,
RH 9's RPC layer differs from RH 8's.

I strongly doubt that this is the underlying cause of your problem.  I
believe that if the upstream LDM on Branch could use the well-known LDM
port (388) then your problems would be solved.

I haven't heard back from Rita on why the LDM on Branch can't get port
388.
