The ldmd.log is emptyJim,
Do you have a 0 length file called ldmd.log? Or, is there no file at all?
It is really important to get logging working. The log is your window to the LDM - this is how you can find out what the LDM is doing and what problems it is having.
The LDM uses the syslog deamon for logging. The instructions for setting this up are at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/ldm/ldmPreInstallList.html#s8. You need to add entries to the system file /etc/syslog.conf. Please try this and let me know what happens.
