Here's some more relevant info regarding the reason for the LDM dumping core.
 Note the log message:

  > > May 09 14:44:59 5Q:tornado stokes[416515]: Growing data by 3522560

This message is from the queue (not a decoder).  When the queue is growing and 
pqexpire is running, it dumps
core.  Solution: make the queue larger.

Note: currently the queue is allowed to grow only on SGI machines.
