Brian,
     Which dataset were you creating those sounding images?  The sounding image 
depends on more than 4 variables in volume and probably needs a lot of memory, 
did you see any memory peak when you moved the probe point? 
     I tried on my local machine and GFS 1 degree data, not seeing this problem.
