[IDV #WIL-310768]: IDV consuming all my cycles when its not doing anything.

Eric,
In the stack trace you sent there is an active thread that looks like it is the 
IDV html display trying to read a URL.  Can you make sure that there are no 
displays created and then see if your machine is still getting hammered?

Also, can you try running with the latest nightly build but replace the idv.jar 
file (in the main install directory) with the jar:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/support/idv.jar

Then run the IDV and delete the main map view window (which the modified jar 
file allows you to do).
Then see if that makes a difference. This gets rid of any active java3d display.
