It sounds like there is some problem with either Java 3D or your video. How did you install the IDV - Web Start or InstallAnywhere? If the latter, are you using the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that came with the installer, or did you change the default selection on that installer panel? When you start the IDV, do you get a window titled "Unidata IDV"? If so, does it have a grey panel where the map window should be? If so, you'll need to upgrade your video driver. If you don't get the main window, do you get any error messages? From the Main Menu, select the Help->Show Console menu and see if there are any messages in the console window.
