Hi Stu,
You can find an example file on the ftp site at:
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/idv/sample_data/04052616_metar.nc

This needs to be loaded in using the FIle Chooser - set the "Data Source 
Type"
to be "Netcdf point data files"
