Inquiry: Please tell me where and how to obtain a single netCDF file of metar obs, or any
other irregular point data with scalars and vectors, for several irregularly spaced
locations and several times which will work with the IDV's "point data"
displays.

Hi Stu,
You can find an example file on the ftp site at:
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/idv/sample_data/04052616_metar.nc

This needs to be loaded in using the FIle Chooser - set the "Data Source Type"
to be "Netcdf point data files"
