Hi Jim and Steve, re: Steve Decker wrote: > I am not sure if that would violate the various Unidata terms and > conditions. I've sent this to the Unidata folks for clarification. A Unidata's site's willingness to feed an individual data available in the Unidata IDD does not violate any Unidata-imposed terms or conditions per se, but there are some restrictions on the data itself: 1) WMO Resolution 40 restrictions There are data products that are broadcast in NOAAPort and then relayed through the IDD that are subject to WMO Resolution 40 restrictions. One important part of WMO Resolution 40 is that products designated as being restricted by the country that produces them may not be re-imported into their country of origin or used for particular purposes. The difficult part in complying with WMO Resolution 40 is that there is no easily obtainable, definitive list of the products that are subject to WMO Resolution 40 restrictions. Unidata educational organizations typically do not have to worry about these restrictions (except for facilitating re-importation into the country of origin) since WMO Resolution 40 explicitly allows use by educational organizations. 2) data whose re-distribution and use is explicitly restricted by the data provider Examples of data whose redistribution and use is explicitly restricted are: - lightning data in the LIGHTNING feed that is made available from UAlbany (NLDN) and WSI Corporation (USPLN) - ACARS data available in the PCWS feed - products in the WSI datastream Unidata university participants are allowed to relay all non-restricted data to individuals/sites if they so choose, but it is their responsibility to support the non-Unidata sites that they feed, not the Unidata Program Center's. It is also the responsibility of the site acting in this capacity to make sure that the folks receiving data from them understand and agree to abide by data redistribution and use restrictions as spelled out in WMO Resolution 40. For Jim specifically: Question: - if Kearny High School is not interested in operating an LDM-based data ingest capability as a Unidata associate member, are you sure that you want to do this as an individual? The reason I ask is mainly because the volumes of data that is available in the IDD are daunting. The following real-time statistics listing will give you an idea of the volumes that are flowing in each IDD datastream: Data Volume Summary for shemp.unidata.ucar.edu Maximum hourly volume 14338.807 M bytes/hour Average hourly volume 8887.262 M bytes/hour Average products per hour 266560 prods/hour Feed Average Maximum Products (M byte/hour) (M byte/hour) number/hour CONDUIT 3371.287 [ 37.934%] 5400.211 72973.574 NEXRAD2 1951.544 [ 21.959%] 3107.763 46759.426 NGRID 884.460 [ 9.952%] 1446.086 19320.149 NEXRAD3 799.953 [ 9.001%] 1212.365 66111.894 FSL2 668.576 [ 7.523%] 1386.980 825.872 HDS 331.668 [ 3.732%] 506.504 18169.064 SPARE 256.770 [ 2.889%] 883.902 9.532 FNMOC 223.008 [ 2.509%] 1662.387 2410.574 NIMAGE 127.709 [ 1.437%] 241.462 182.128 GEM 76.182 [ 0.857%] 410.555 939.000 FNEXRAD 55.818 [ 0.628%] 66.329 70.468 EXP 49.343 [ 0.555%] 97.932 400.319 IDS|DDPLUS 46.203 [ 0.520%] 62.264 38009.553 UNIWISC 25.310 [ 0.285%] 37.260 28.404 PCWS 14.392 [ 0.162%] 20.102 21.957 DIFAX 3.694 [ 0.042%] 12.963 4.872 LIGHTNING 1.246 [ 0.014%] 4.110 322.149 GPS 0.097 [ 0.001%] 0.935 0.957 If you are not looking to receive data in real-time and 24x7, then remote access to data hosted on ADDE, RAMADDA and THREDDS servers via an application like the Unidata IDV may be more useful to you. I must follow this up by letting you know that the amount of ECMWF data that is available through these servers is even less than is available in the IDD. The reason for this is that making the data available on a server violates WMO Resolution 40 restrictions, so we (and others) can not make products so restricted.
