Bob,
You probably need to go into linuxconfig and select an 8 bit depth
visual (256 colors) and unselect any 16 or 24 bit visuals you have selected.
The error message you show is typical of running an X server (Xfree86)
not in 8 bit mode.
If you find that you really need the true color visual for other applications,
then Mike Leuthold at Arizona sent a message in the support archives
mentioning that he runs 2 X servers (using the the ctrl-alt-f7/f8
hot toggle between the). He can then have his 8 bit visuals for GEMPAK and
32 bit visuals for other applications.
Also, with KDE, I set all those icon colors to gray instead of the
high color use mode that is the default:
