Doug, The default visual ID must be 8 bit pseudocolor for GEMPAK. The configuration for the depth of the X server is generally set in /etc/dt/config or /usr/lib/X11/config (the former if you are running CDE). The man page on X(1) should define the options that may be specified with the server on startup, generall something like -defdepth 8 (unless you already are setting it to 16 bits.
