I remembered to talk to Chiz about the grib2->grib1 conversion
process (!). Here is the link that he suggested you investigate:
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/codes/GRIB2/
In particular, the cnvgrib-1.1.2.tar file looks to have the code
that you will need.
