Robert,
This is a long overdue update on the status of being able to serve
METEOSAT data via ADDE.
>>I realized that I can't open the machine up now because
>>all of the data from the METEOSATS are there..and from
>>what I understand I can't make that available..only
>>the 6-hr. data and I assume only 6-hr from INDOEX.
>>I will have to go to plan B.
The situation is clearing after a number of messages between myself
and the head of legal services at EUMETSAT and with a NOAA contact.
EUMETSAT declares METEOSAT data (or any kind) to be "realtime" until
it is 3 days old. The EUMETSAT agreement with NOAA explicitly states
that after the data is no longer realtime, there is no restriction
on its redistribution. The EUMETSAT head of legal services has not
yet, however, officially blessed my efforts of serving non-realtime
METEOSAT via ADDE, DODS, or Java RMI. Even though comments from
NOAA indicate that I will not be in violation of their MOU with
EUMETSAT, I will not feel comfortable until I get an official OK
from EUMETSAT.
Since you get the METEOSAT data in the same manner that I do (or, more
correctly, I am now getting the METEOSAT data in the same manner that
you have been doing for quite some time), you are also restricted from
redistributing the data until it is no longer considered to be
"realtime". So, you could restructure your publically available
METEOSAT dataset to include only images that are older than 3 days and
make that generally available to the Undiata community, but I would
feel much more secure if we get the official blessing from EUMETSAT.
I hope that this is not too confusing/frustrating...
Tom
