You are right, as soon as you sent in the message data started flowing.
As to why this happened, we don't yet know, but we can verify the
outage by noting the gap in GOES-West IR images received on motherlode:

SSEC did have a brief power hiccup yesterday morning (lasted less than
an hour), so maybe they had another today. The odd thing is that they
are usually very good about sending an announcement explaining that
they are down and then a follow-up message when service is restored.
I will be on the lookout for the latter message.
