NOAA-15 problems continue
- Subject: NOAA-15 problems continue

All NOAA-15 HRPT, LAC, and GAC data, since ~1145UTC Saturday, JDAY 204,
has been unusable.
Last report from SOCC, on 7/22 (issued 7/24):
1. Anomaly/Event Description
On July 22 (JDAY 204) during three real-time passes (11:50z, 13:30z, and
16:40z), the AVHRR sync delta indicated that AVHRR was resyncing with
the
MIRP as often as every 3 seconds. When the AVHRR and the MIRP are
perated in a synchronized mode (the normal configuration), the sync
delta also
drives the sampling process which the MIRP uses to format all product
ata; therefore, loss of sync has major ramifications to product quality.
Therefore, at 18:23z, the NOAA-15 MIRP was placed into internal sync
mode.
The MIRP will remain in this configuration until further notice.
2. Current Operational Status/Impact
AVHRR products are currently unusable. All other instrument data is
nominal.
During the past several hours, the AVHRR motor current was erratic,
averaging ~230 mA, with values to nearly 250 mA. Twenty-four hours ago,
the AVHRR motor current was reasonably steady at ~210 mA.
The engineering team and operations crews have been advised that the
NOAA-15 AVHRR scan motor should not be turned off under any
circumstances
unless spacecraft (not instrument) health and safety is jeopardized.
3. Future Action Plans
Contingency meetings continue since the first event on July 9, including
participation from NOAA, NASA, ITT and Lockheed Martin. These meetings
are used to present and review data and to plan for future anomaly
response activities.
