Tom,
If you get a chance, I wondered if a question could be brought up with
the SSEC guys at some point when you are out in Madison next week. I
know that Bob has opened up the SSEC archives for GOES data, however,
is there any prospect for the academic community to gain similar access
to NOAA Polar Orbiter archives?
During this TOPSE study I have been looking at NOAA HRPT imagery over
the Arctic posted by the Canadian Government from the NOAA-14 and
NOAA-12 polar orbiters (maybe others too), but I haven't yet explored
the options for retrieving Polar Orbiter data (either as image files (I
mean jpg or gif views) or *more preferably* in a raw form that we could
bring up in McIDAS. This was something I was going to add to the TOPSE
work, but when we found Gary was ill, there just wasn't the opportunity
to pursue a lot of new things.
I had spoken very briefly about these interests with Steve Ackerman
back at AMS (seems like a lifetime ago?). Anyway, if you don't get a
chance to bring it up, I will eventually contact Steve on my own. I
just thought you might have the opportunity to find out if there is any
option of the Polar Orbiter data archives being generally or broadly
available to the academic community now or in the near future.
Thanks for representing the community interest in satellite data ;-)
