Sherrie,
>My name is Sherrie Fredrick and I work for MMM at NCAR. I am
>interested in getting the lightning data. Could you tell me how to go
>about getting it and the use of software to view it.
The NLDN lightning data is available from SUNY Albany by point-to-point
LDM (IDD) transfer. The distribution is point-to-point (as opposed
to the normal IDD fanout distribution) so that SUNYA can maintain
control of the recipients of the data. The NLDN data is owned by Global
Atmospherics, Inc. and is provided to the Unidata community under
very strict control guidelines. Please review:

The last page has a 'mailto' for the person that should be contacted to
get the data.
As to what software can work with the data, Unidata provides two packages
that can work with the NLDN lightning data: GEMPAK and McIDAS. You can learn
more about these packages through the various web pages accessible
from the Unidata WWW HomePage that deal with them.
